What Is a D&D Health Calculator?
A D&D health calculator is a quick way to work out your character's hit points (HP). Your HP shows how much damage your character can take before reaching 0 hit points. It depends mainly on your class, level, and Constitution modifier.
This calculator is designed for D&D 5e characters who want a fast answer without doing the math by hand.
How Does the D&D HP Calculator Work?
At level 1, your character starts with the maximum value of their class Hit Die plus their Constitution modifier. At later levels, you add the fixed HP value for the Hit Die (or your rolled result) plus your Constitution modifier.
For example, a level 5 Fighter with a Constitution modifier of +2 starts with 10 + 2 HP at level 1. Using the fixed average for later levels adds 6 + 2 HP at each additional level.
The calculator can also include extra per-level HP bonuses, a flat bonus, temporary HP, incoming damage, and healing.
D&D 5e Hit Dice by Class
| Class | Hit Die | Fixed HP after level 1 |
|---|---|---|
| Barbarian | d12 | 7 |
| Fighter, Paladin, Ranger | d10 | 6 |
| Artificer, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Monk, Rogue, Warlock | d8 | 5 |
| Sorcerer, Wizard | d6 | 4 |
What Is a Hit Die in D&D?
A Hit Die is the die connected to your character's class. It helps determine your maximum HP as you level up and can also be used to recover HP during a short rest. The number and size of your Hit Dice come from your character's class and level.
How Constitution Affects HP
Your Constitution score gives you a Constitution modifier. That modifier is added to your HP at each character level. A higher Constitution modifier therefore gives you more maximum hit points.
The modifier is calculated as floor((Constitution score − 10) ÷ 2). For example, a Constitution score of 14 gives a +2 modifier.
